The first step is to perform schedule maintenance in MS Project so that:

1. No work which has not been started remains earlier than the Status Date on the Gant Chart
2. No unfinished effort remains having an end date sooner than the Status Date.
3. No Actual Begin Date is later than Status Date.
4. No Actual Finish is later than Status Date.

Without having Project use the % Complete when running schedule maintenance, MS Project can't tell the best way to help you.

Here are a couple ways to output the targeted Gant view:
