What is a
Gant Chart? A Gant Diagram is a graphical
illustration of work effort as pieces of work across
time. It helps organization and monitoring of project
development and resource distribution. The left hand
side of the Gant Diagram is a column with the WBS
(essentially, a series of tasks). The chart part shows
time succession, communicated either in absolute or
relative time.

Making Gant Charts communicate Task Slippage in Microsoft Project
Gant Diagram Instructional Goal:
Teach project managers how to communicate slippage of one item on
another part of the Gant Diagram using the current schedule
without updating the task start date:
Start with a Gant chart which has baselined already:
One of the WBS tasks has a forecast start date of 10/22 and then completes
on 10/24. Currently, 10/27, the WBS items has not started.
The final Gant Chart should communicate:
-
Projected start date of 10/22 - baseline ending 10/24
-
Re-Forecasted starting date 10/27 - ending 10/29.
Instructions:
The first step is to perform schedule maintenance in MS Project so that:
-
No work which has not been started remains earlier than the Status Date on the
Gant Chart
-
No unfinished effort remains having an end date sooner than the Status Date.
-
No Actual Begin Date is later than Status Date.
-
No Actual Finish is later than Status Date.
Without having Project use the % Complete when running schedule maintenance, MS
Project can't tell the best way to help you.
Here are a couple ways to output the targeted Gant view:
-
View/Tracking Gant:
It presents a view with the chronological bars for both forecasted and
baselined in order.
-
Select Format/Gant Chart Wizard:
Click Baseline and continue from that point.
-
Tools/Tracking/Update Project:
Click the menu option to reschedule incomplete work so that it starts after
mm/dd/yyyy
Happily, Microsoft Project provides the status date as part of the process.
