Making Gant Charts show Task Slippage in MS Project

Gant Diagram Tutorial Objective:

Teach a way to communicate slippage of one item on another row of the Gant Diagram based upon the set date without adjusting the task's start date:

With a project plan having previously been baselined:
A WBS item is planned to begin on 10/22 and then complete on 10/24. Currently, 10/27, the WBS items have not started.

The resulting Gant Diagram needs to communicate:

  • Projected beginning 10/22 - forecasted conclusion 10/24
  • Re-Forecasted beginning 10/27 - conclusion 10/29.

How to make it:

The first step is to perform schedule maintenance in Microsoft Project so that:

  1. No remains to be started before the Date used for Status
  2. No incomplete work having a finish date earlier than the Date used for Status.
  3. No Actual Begin Date happens after the Date used for Status.
  4. No Actual Start happens after the Date used for Status.

If you don't have MS Project use percent Completed when executing schedule maintenance, MS Project has no way to know what to do it can adjust the timeline.

Here are several ways to output the intended Gant view:

  • View/Tracking Gant:
It shows a view with the chronological bars for both baseline and current schedule forecast right after one another.
  • Select Format/Gant Chart Wizard:
Choose Baseline and run from there.
  • Tools/Tracking/Update Project:
Choose the menu selection to reschedule incomplete work so that it starts after mm/dd/yyyy
Luckily, MS Project provides the status date through the process.
