Making Gant Charts convey WBS Item Slippage in MS Project

Gant Diagram Tutorial Objective:

Teach a way to display slippage of a task on another line of the Gant Diagram using the current schedule without adjusting the task start date:

Starting with a Gant diagram having baselined previously:
A assignment is planned to begin on 10/22 completing on 10/24. Currently, 10/27, the tasks didn't kick-off yet.

The resulting Gant should display:

  • Projected beginning 10/22 - forecasted finish 10/24
  • Estimated beginning 10/27 - finish 10/29.

What to do:

The first step is to perform schedule maintenance in Microsoft Project so that:

  1. No work remains unstarted earlier than the Date used for Status
  2. No unfinished work remains having a completion date earlier than the Date used for Status.
  3. No Actual Start happens after the Date used for Status.
  4. No Actual Completion Date happens after the Date used for Status.

If you don't have MS Project use percent Completed to run schedule maintenance, MS Project won't know how to help you.

Following are some things you can do to generate the intended Gant view:

  • View/Tracking Gant:
Project displays a view with the timeline graphics for both baseline and current schedule forecast in order.
  • Select Format/Gant Chart Wizard:
Choose Baseline and continue from that point.
  • Tools/Tracking/Update Project:
Choose the menu item to reschedule incomplete work so that it starts after mm/dd/yyyy
Fortunately, Microsoft Project provides the status date during the process.
